The history of Dubrovnik Summer Festival was - undoubtedly - conceived during thirteen nights of September 1950, when a real town persistently and uniquely transformed itself into an imaginary Town. Ten years later, French writer Claude Aveline, who had taken part, wrote how he could not surmise that he was attending "the birth of one of the most glorious festivals of our time".

The Festival is open to all new, innovative, personal, experimental, radical, subversive etc. work (film, video, new media) of all genres and lengths, preferably from outside the mainstream, whether it was made on shoe string budget, or is a studio release. as recent developments indicate that more contemporary artists are looking for new ways of expression in audio visual medium, the festival will present works involving traditional film techniques or the latest technology of electronic image. The Festival presents screenings of selected films and videos, cd-roms, installations, performances, retrospectives, workshops, discussions and festival's catalogue. along with special money prizes, the festival's sculpture is awarded for each category, by international juries.

Zagreb Film Festival is a new cultural manifestation in Zagreb. Festival is taking place in urban area and stimulates innovativeness and co-operation as important defining factors of urban culture. During the festival's five days The Student centre will be a kind of city in a city: it will revive the memories inscribed in rooms where, during the 20th century, some of the most important events on Zagreb cultural scene are taking place: exhibitions of Zagreb choir, Theatre & TD plays, exhibitions in the Gallery of the Student centre, MM centre showings, new wave concerts, and theatre plays performed by alternative groups.

Folklore festivals have a long standing tradition in Croatia. From 1930s to 1950s, they had been gathering local participants and presenting traditional Croatian culture. In 1966, the International Folklore Festival was established and Zagreb has ever since been a vivacious meeting point for members of different nations and cultures, a stage for their music, dance, and other heritage.
